CAMP SUNSHINE SALLY J. HALE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION


Camp Sunshine is pleased to announce the Camp Sunshine Scholarship application is now open for the ’24 –’25 school year.


The application Deadline is Monday, May 1, 2024.


The Camp Sunshine Scholarship was found in 1992, in memory of Steven L. Doak. Steven L. Doak, was a dedicated Camp Sunshine supporter who donated his professional accounting services to Camp Sunshine.  Steven L. Doak died of cancer in 1992, and the Camp Sunshine Board of Directors established this scholarship in memory of his service to Camp Sunshine. In 1999, the scholarship was expanded in memory of former camper,  Jennifer Allen.  In 2022, the Camp Sunshine Executive Committee established the Camp Sunshine Scholarship to honor Executive Director SALLY J. HALE  to celebrate Sally's commitment to Camp Sunshine.


The goal of the scholarships is to provide financial assistance to a student attending a college, university, or technical school. The Camp Sunshine Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to childhood cancer survivors who have attended Camp Sunshine programs and who have overcome challenges of childhood cancer.


  1. Eligibility is restricted to applicants who are, or have been, participants of Camp Sunshine programs who have or have had cancer.  
  2. A high school senior, high school graduate, or current post-secondary undergraduate, graduate student.
  3. Applicants must be accepted into or enrolled and progressing satisfactorily in an accredited university, college or technical institute (two-year program or more) and must be a full-time student.
  4. Scholarships are in the range of $500- $5,000. A limited number of scholarships are available depending on funding.
  5. Two Letters of Recommendation from NON-Family members. Letters must include length of time and in what capacity they have known the applicant. Each recommender should include their full name, contact information and signature. Returning applicants only need One Letter of Recommendation. 
  6. The applicant must submit an essay, not to exceed 800 words, describing why you feel you should be considered for this scholarship. Please include what your future plans and desired career path are and how the scholarship would be of benefit.
  7. The applicant must complete the scholarship application, incomplete applications will not be considered.
  8. Submit an official copy of your high school transcript or official copy of your college transcript if you have attended at least one year of college or if you are dually enrolled in college.
  9. Applications are due May 1.


All scholarship funds will be paid directly to the academic institution in which the student is enrolled for defraying tuition, fees, books or supplies.  Prior recipients are welcome to submit an application for additional scholarship funding, however first time applicants will be given priority.
